And here you are
The headlights switched off
Delaying
Knowing the stretch before you yawns into the night
And do you listen for the sound of your own heartbeat
When even the crickets huddle under the dry leaves
Silent
When the raccoons and opossums lumber and get themselves hid
When only the night things make their own sense of the world
You could close your eyes
And there would be no difference
And yet you stubbornly resist
Eyes seeking and not finding
something
Anything of the familiar
You have walked this path countless times
In the light
Accepting all
During the day
It never occurred to you how alone
You would feel in the darkness
You hear the click of your car door opening
And steel your breath
You feel you could run but you don’t
The night pays no mind
