ENSLAVED IN SILENCE

By Athena Marie

Looking into his striking green eyes, desperation looking back.

His eyes lifeless. Pleading for approval.

A smile, essential from me.

To help him withstand his existence.

For most, sleep brings rest.

For him, it’s worse than waking hours.

The pain ensues.

Encompassing every inch of him.

His pillow stained with tears, tears he is unaware of.

I lie beside him, listening to his whimpers.

Attempting to soothe his throbbing body.

Failing incredibly.

His eyes open.

Hopelessness overtaking his waking thoughts.

Tears staining his face, tears he is aware of.

Tears that gush from his soul.

I try to speak, reassuring words screaming inside my head.

Silence.

The words are there but they mean nothing.

Convincing him of untruths hurts more than the pain.

I cry now too, sorrow and grief pulsing through me.

Looking into his striking green eyes, desperation looking back.

It is difficult to live with what I know.

Guilt and relief echo through my veins.

Torn between the right thing for him or the right thing.

Asking my permission, his voice desperate. To go to the river.

Pleading with me. To let him go.

Unable, I stay silent.

He continues to live for me!
